City of Refuge, Hōnaunau Bay


Witness the richness and depth of Hawaiian history and culture at Pu’uhonua O Hōnaunau, formerly known as the City of Refuge Park.

Restoration by the National Park Service made the site look and feel like the late 1700’s.

The 180-acre park is located at Hōnaunau Bay, by the royal beach. To drive, go to Highway 11, (also known as Hawaii Belt Road and Queen Kaahumanu Hwy), to between mile-markers 103 and 104. At the Honaunau Post Office, turn towards the ocean onto Hwy 160. Drive 3.5 miles until you see the park sign as pictured here.
